Build Community One Goal at a Time

Team Abilene

I’m a firm believer in setting smart goals and this week I accomplished one I set at the beginning of the year. The goal was to find a way to speak in public.

There are several reasons why it was important for me to do this. First, I am trying to find my voice as a leader. I have several team members who look to me for guidance and I’ve had a difficult time speaking in front of them sometimes. But like anything, the more you do it the more natural it feels and the better you get.

The second reason was it put our team in the spotlight for a brief moment in our community. The event was called Wake Up Wednesday and we hosted the event through our local chamber of commerce. We were given 10 minutes to share our company with the community. There was an unexpected bonus at the event that I was personally excited about. The local FOX TV station showed up and asked to interview me. See story here.

The third reason I set this goal was to create an opportunity to lead a project different than our day to day activities. In a recent interview with Dr. Gary McCaleb, he explains that “leaders operate without a net.” He said, “leadership is when a bunch of kids on the playground are standing around and one kid yells, ‘let’s play tag!’… That’s leadership.” For me, this project was a simple call to action for my team to “come play”, and we did.

The fourth and final reason this was important to me, was to publicly carry our company flag and share our purpose with our community. I was proud of our team today and proud to be a part of something bigger than myself. This was an opportunity to share freely what we do, why we care, and how we do it with pride, honor, and integrity.
